Cost per watt is the solar industry’s unit price — the only fair way to compare a 5.2 kW quote to a 7.8 kW quote. MySunROI benchmarks state pages and the homepage calculator in $/W terms first, then layers the 30% federal ITC for net cash cost. If a salesperson refuses to discuss $/W, treat that as fog, not personalization.
The formula (and what belongs in the numerator)
$/W = total cash system price ÷ (DC system size in kW × 1,000). Example: $21,000 ÷ 6,000 W = $3.50/W. Include equipment, labor, standard racking, standard permitting, and monitoring that ships with the invert — unless the quote explicitly excludes them.
Exclude optional batteries when you compare pure PV $/W; price storage as a separate line. Likewise, do not divide a loan’s “total of payments” by watts — that conflates interest with hardware.
